A Personal Approach to Male Chest Contouring

For men with longstanding chest fullness or changes that have developed over time, gynecomastia surgery is planned around your anatomy and physique to create a chest contour that complements your natural proportions.

More Than a Matter of Fitness

Gynecomastia is a common condition that causes the male chest to appear fuller or more prominent than expected. It may be present from adolescence or develop later due to hormonal changes, certain medications, weight fluctuations or other factors.

Because glandular tissue does not respond to exercise in the same way as body fat, chest fullness may remain despite a healthy and active lifestyle. A consultation allows our surgeons to determine what is contributing to the enlargement and discuss the treatment options that may be appropriate.

Treatment Tailored to Your Chest Anatomy

Your consultation begins with a detailed assessment of your chest anatomy, including the amount of glandular tissue, fat distribution, skin quality and overall chest proportions. This allows your surgeon to plan the procedure according to your anatomy and goals, rather than taking a standardised approach.

Depending on what is contributing to the chest enlargement, your surgeon may recommend tissue excision, VASER liposuction, fat grafting or a combination of techniques.

Excision of Glandular Tissue

Dense glandular tissue is removed through an incision placed along the edge of the areola. Where excess skin is present, additional skin removal may be required.

VASER Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

VASER liposuction may be used to reduce excess fat and refine the surrounding chest contour through small incisions.

Fat Grafting for Chest Contouring

Where suitable, fat may be transferred to selected areas of the chest to improve contour and definition.

The Expertise Behind Every Surgical Plan

Assessing Your Chest Anatomy and Grade

Every case of gynecomastia presents differently. Your surgeon assesses the amount and distribution of glandular tissue and fat, together with your skin quality and overall chest proportions. This helps determine the extent of correction required and guides how your procedure should be planned.

Planning the Incisions

Incision placement is planned according to the tissue that needs to be removed and the degree of excess skin present. Where suitable, incisions may be placed along the edge of the areola or near the armpit to keep them less noticeable. More significant skin laxity may require a longer incision to achieve an appropriate chest contour.

Refining the Overall Chest Contour

Planning extends beyond removing excess tissue. Your surgeon also considers the transition between the chest and surrounding areas to create a smoother and more balanced contour. Where appropriate, fat grafting may be used to add volume to selected areas and improve the overall chest shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gynecomastia surgery safe?
Gynecomastia surgery at Polaris is performed by MOH-accredited, board-certified consultant plastic surgeons in licensed surgical facilities. As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, including bleeding, infection, asymmetry and changes in nipple sensation. Your surgeon will explain the risks relevant to your procedure during consultation and advise you on the appropriate care throughout your recovery.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, so you will not feel anything during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling, and tightness in the chest area is normal in the days following surgery. Your surgeon will provide guidance on managing post-operative discomfort, and most patients find it settles progressively.
Gynecomastia is caused by enlarged glandular tissue, while chest fullness may also be due to excess fat. In some cases, both may be present. During consultation, the surgeon will assess the chest to determine the likely cause and advise whether surgery is appropriate.
The results of gynecomastia surgery are generally long-lasting. However, some glandular tissue may remain after surgery and can enlarge if contributing factors such as hormonal changes, certain medications or underlying medical conditions develop. Significant weight gain may also increase fat in the chest and affect its overall contour. Your surgeon will discuss these considerations with you during your consultation.
Gynecomastia surgery may be suitable for men with persistent chest enlargement who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations of the procedure. Suitability is assessed individually during consultation, where the surgeon will advise whether surgery is appropriate.
